Q:

How do I take my business to the next level?

If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else.

—Yogi Berra

Getting to “the next level” is, of course, pretty subjective. We have different views of what our “next level” is. Is it to build a team, expand capacity, increase profit, attract an investor, have a social impact, sell our business, or slow down and smell the flowers? The point is to know what you want to achieve. What story do you want to tell? Whom do you want to tell it to? And why?

It’s a question of purpose.

You need to organize yourself. It’s likely that at the beginning you grew organically. One project led to another. One client connected you to another. Word of mouth. Chance and opportunity. But now you’ve been around.  You’ve got a sense of what you can do and you want to get there.

These four suggestions will help.

  1. Set one or two concrete goals.

  2. Collect “data to help you measure what you’ve done -- and not done.

  3. Look for strategic partners

  4. Be loyal to your clients.
